Madden's Orchard is always evolving, growing, and changing. The apple season is a year round event for us with planning, pruning, spraying, and harvesting. We are in year two of a three year process to become an organic grower. The experience has been challenging, and each season is a learning experience for us, but our apples have never looked or tasted better!
Going organic offers several challenges. The percentage of apples that we are able to bring to harvest is a bit lower, and the organic spray application times are different, but the taste and overall quality is definitely worth the extra effort. The apples seem to grow better when we prune our trees. We have discovered that to have an effective harvest we need to thin the amount of apples on the tree, so during the growing season we trim clusters of apples down. If there are 4 or 5 growing together we will trim that to 2 or 3. We've seen great results with larger apples and less apples that are deformed from another apple or branch growing into it!
